The Society of Metallurgical Engineers of the Philippines (SMEP) was created in June 1982 through the concerted efforts of Engr. Eduardo M. Sacris, Antonio M. Ostrea, Ernesto C. Ignacio, Romarico J. Platon, Jones R. Castro, David P. Cruz, Augustus C. Flores, Estefanio M. Gacad, Eli D. Lucas, Meliton U. Ordilla Jr., and Alfredo F. San Miguel.

The Society aims to advance the practice and education of metallurgical engineering and to promote and actively engage its members on research, writing, publishing and dissemination of knowledge within the field of metallurgical engineering. The SMEP has regularly held conferences and symposia that would advance the metallurgical engineering profession, among them the Symposium on New Trends in Metallurgy (September 17-18, 1992) at the Asian Institute of Management and the Symposium on Minerals and Metals Towards 2000 (Mar 13-14, 1997) at the National Engineering Center in UP Diliman. It also cooperates with government agencies for the promotion, advancement and protection of interests of the metallurgical engineering profession.

The SMEP is a member of the Philippine Institute of Mining, Metallurgical, and Geological Engineers (PIMMGE) and the Philippine Technological Council of PSBA (PTC-PSBA). The SMEP today has 428 members all over the country.
