The Philippine Society of Mechanical Engineers (PSME) was founded in 1952 with the objective of uniting and enjoining mechanical engineers in the pursuit of further professional growth and the upliftment of the mechanical engineering profession in general.

In 1955, the PSME was registered with SEC as a non-stock non-profit organization with Engr. Tobias P. Marcelo as its first President. It merged with the Philippine Association of Mechanical and Electrical Engineers (PAMEE) on January 1, 1967 and remained under its umbrella for 9 years.

It established its first regional chapter in Davao in 1957. It has chapters in Saudi Arabia, Chicago, USA, and Brunei Darussalam.

PSME has worked in close collaboration with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), the Products and Standards Committee, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, and the Societies of Mechanical Engineering of Japan and Korea.

On July 8, 1975, the Society was accredited by the PRC as the national professional organization of mechanical engineers. A year after its accreditation, it amended its by-laws and became independent from the PAMEE. In celebration of its Silver Anniversary in 1977, the PSME hosted the First Asian Mechanical Engineers Conference with the theme “Cooperative Interaction for Mutual Progress.”

In 1994, the PSME Continuing Education Center was established and the Mechanical Engineering Journal was re-activated. Two years later, the First Mechanical Engineering Congress was held and the PSME Scholarship Program that was started in 1988 was fully implemented. For two consecutive years, the PSME was cited by the PRC as the “Outstanding Accredited Professional Organization of the Year” in 1997 and 1998.
