The Masters and Mates Association of the Philippines (MMAP) was established in 1975 and duly recognized by the PRC on June 22, 1976 as the accredited professional organization of marine deck officers. The Association was created to raise the standards of the Marine Deck Officers within global competitiveness; foster and promote camaraderie, high ideal integrity, honesty and loyalty to the service; and promote, encourage and develop socio-economic programs for the welfare of the Filipino marine profession as a whole as well as to their FAMILIES.
The MMAP conducted its first mass oath-taking for successful examinees on July 21, 1991. It held the first Merchant Marine National Conference Workshop in 1997, which later became an annual activity of the Association. With the revitalization of MMAP in 1996, the number of active members reached 4,577 excluding the Balik-MMAP members.
