Through the years, the practice of Interior Design has flourished and has become a well-defined endeavor, but the profession has also attracted untrained craftsmen whose practice threatened the prestige of the profession. Thus, on August 17, 1964, a group of practitioners organized themselves and founded the Philippine Institute of Interior Designers (PIID). Among the founding members were Ched Berenguer-Topacio, Lor Calma, Edgar Ramirez and Mel Gana, Antonio Zamora (the first President), Rosario Luz and Wili Fernandez.

PIID maintains a vigorous and healthy relationship with foreign interior designers, being affiliated with the Asia-Pacific Space Designer Association (APSDA), the International Federation of Interior Architects/Designers (IFI), and is presently involved in the formation of an ASEAN Organization for Interior Designers. The Institute sends delegates to conventions abroad, for a mutual beneficial exchange and transfer of knowledge and technology.

It also believes that the greater needs of the profession can be best served by one strong organization with programs that provide seminars for continuing professional education, enhancement of skills, educational tours, technical presentations, management principle, and other aspects that contribute to the total development and well-being of a professional.

PIID promotes programs and activities that will keep the members active and committed, thereby contribute to the upliftment and enhancement of the profession. Registered with the SEC on September 30, 1964 the Institute aims to unite all registered Interior Designers in the Philippines and to lift interior design to the highest standards of professionalism. In 1982, the PIID renewed its efforts to promote further recognition of the profession with the creation of the Specialty Board for Interior Design.

On August 10, 1992, the Society was accredited by PRC as the bona fide professional organization of interior designers. Through the efforts of PIID, the Philippine Interior Design Act of 1998” (Republic Act No. 8534) was approved.
